2013 Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Changes

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is an essential part of many standards and codes sets.  Now the new 2013 Edition has been released.  Users of the publication need to know that there are changes in the new edition and in the way the Code will be released in the future.

The International Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) establishes rules of safety relating to pressure integrity.  These rules cover the design, fabrication, and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, and nuclear power plant components during construction.

ASME has been publishing the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code since 1914.  Up till now, it has been released on a 3-year cycle with addenda issued between times.  However, ASME is changing it’s publishing system and the new XML-based software does not support the generation of the addenda.  So the BPVC will be issued on a two-year schedule going forward.

For those of you who use the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, this means that updates will only occur by the use of Errata between the publication dates.  You’ll also continue to see the release of Code Case Supplements and Interpretations on a regular basis.

Any accreditations and certifications based on the Code will not be impacted by this new publication schedule.  For the ASME mark, authorized inspection agencies can continue to found at the ASME Website Listing.
