New IEEE 730, for Software Q A Processes

There’s a new edition available for the IEEE 730, “IEEE Standard for Software Quality Assurance Processes.”  You can purchase your copy in paper format or for pdf download from the Document Center webstore now!  The 138 page revision replaces the previous 2002 Edition which is now obsolete.

Why should you use IEEE 730?  When developing software, this standard can provide the basis for a justified statement of confidence that the deliverable will conform to the requirements of the contract.  This can be software as a product in and of itself or as part of a system.

Previous editions of the IEEE STD 730 gave the user a SQA (Software Quality Assurance) plan outline.  However, this new 2014 Edition goes beyond the previous scope to harmonize it’s content with the processes of ISO/IEC 12207, “Systems and Software Engineering – Software Life Cycle Processes.”  You’ll use it during the entire software development cycle, from initiating a project through planning, controlling and executing your SQA plan.

Since the major considerations in the re-write are bringing the IEEE 730 in line with the ISO/IEC 12207, your Annex A provides a mapping between the clauses of the 2 documents.  And Annex B gives you a map of the SQA Plan outlines for the previous 2002 Edition and this new 2014 one.  A great guide for your gap analysis requirements!

Other great topics addressed in the remaining Annexes are:

  • Annex C – Guidance for developing your SQA Plans
  • Annex D – A map of IEEE 730 to ISO/IEC 15504-2 (SPICE)
  • Annex E – Specific guidance for the Medical Device and the Nuclear Generation industries
  • Annex F – The relationship between SQA and agile development
  • Annex G – A map of IEEE 730 to ISO/IEC 29110-1 (for very small entities)
  • Annex H – Software tool validation
  • Annex I – Risk assessment
  • Annex J – Corrective and preventive action/root cause analysis
  • Annex K – Cross-reference
  • Annex L – Bibliography (65 citations)
