The ISO 22514 series covers the use of statistics in measuring capability and performance for process management. Very frequently this method of confirming the output of a manufacturing process is done in the form of a study. It may be used for diagnosing a problem or setting a benchmark for the process itself. It’s a great quality tool, so the recent updates to the series should be noted by a wide variety of users. Today we’ll review the new 2nd Edition of ISO 22514-1, “Statistical methods in process management – Capability and performance – Part 1: General principles and concepts.” It’s the overview document and the foundation for the rest of the series.
The standard is divided in 10 sections. It contains the usual scope, referenced documents and terminology clauses, as well as a section on symbols and abbreviated terms. The remaining 6 clauses cover the topic from start to finish. You’ll learn about the pre-conditions for application, how to collect data, and the analysis you’ll do with it (including lots of charts, graphs and formulas). The publication closes with a discussion of how you’ll use your results, including benefits and limitations.
The ISO 22514-1 2nd Edition is a technical update of the 1st Edition from 2009 (now obsolete). Currently there are 7 documents in the series, with an 8th one in the works. The published series consists of:
